Weekend Escapes from Jakarta

Living in Jakarta means some of the best weekends in Java are a train or a ferry ride away. These four routes are the ones I keep recommending to visiting friends, each tested on an ordinary Saturday-to-Sunday schedule.

Bandung by the fast train

Leave Halim at seven, reach Padalarang by eight and be in a Braga café before the crowds. Spend the afternoon in the Dago highlands and be back for sunset over the city. Sunday morning is for a slow breakfast before the ride home.

Key points

  • Book the fast-train return before lunch on Sunday; the evening seats fill up.
  • Bring a light jacket for Puncak evenings.
  • Cash only on the smaller islands.
  • Ask for the local price at the tea shops and buy the loose leaves.

Puncak and the tea highlands

Cooler air, tea plantations and a fruit market that sells passion fruit by the bucket. The Gunung Mas tea walk is an easy detour and the road back passes some of the best roadside corn stalls in West Java.

Example in code

# Saturday, Jakarta → Bandung (approx.)
07:00 depart Halim (fast train, IDR 250k)
07:50 arrive Padalarang, feeder train to Bandung (IDR 10k)
09:00 coffee on Braga, scooter rental (IDR 100k / day)
17:30 sunset at Dago

Thousand Islands and Yogyakarta

A morning ferry from Ancol puts you on a quiet island before lunch. For a longer weekend, the night train to Yogyakarta rewards you with temples at sunrise and a coffee scene that will ruin instant coffee forever.

The travel budget was modest, the itinerary was ambitious and the food was excellent.

Takeaways

You do not need a long holiday to see Java properly. Pick one route, leave early, and keep Sunday afternoon free for the trip home.
